GT Cup heads to Oulton Park for blast through

Cheshire countryside

The GT Cup hits the halfway point of the season after four superb weekends of racing so far.  Each group had seen title favourites emerge but we have experienced some incredibly close racing with the fiercest battles taking place in GTA.

 

Dominic Paul sprinted away from the pack at Brands Hatch taking three wins to build a healthy cushion at the top of the championship. He added two further wins to the tally at Spa but Gary Smith and Mick Mercer are also race winners at Donington Park and Silverstone and have closed the gap after a disastrous Brands Hatch weekend. Meanwhile Brent Millage has consistently been plugging away to rack up seven podium finishes and lies second in the standings.

 

In GTB the BMW of Tom and James Webb leads the way but two DNFs at Silverstone have dropped them back firmly into the grasp of the Top Cats Racing entry of Neil Huggins. He is now only 20 points behind in his Lamborghini Gallardo but only 26 points behind him is the Ginetta G50 of John Saunders. A stellar weekend at Silverstone for the yellow and silver car secured three race wins so he should never be discounted.

 

Competition has come from all sides in the GTC group but Jake Rattenbury has been the man to watch. The Lamborghini Huracan is mighty but will it suit the tight confines of the 2.69-mile, 17-turn circuit? We haven’t had a wet race so far this year but we know the Porsche 991 goes very well if it rains so the MAS Motorsport and Black Mamba Racing entries could be the ones to watch.

 

The Mosler of Kevin Riley and Gareth Downing returned to the championship after a three-year break whilst they ran the Lotus Evora. The extra power served them well at Silverstone with two GTO group podiums the result but Graham Davidson has so far had it all his own way. Nigel Hudson and Adam Wilcox have challenged and won races, most recently at Silverstone, but the real pressure could come from returning 2016 champion Jordan Witt in his Bentley.  There is no doubt about it, we are in for two spectacular races.

 

The cars will be on track at 11:05 on Saturday 29th July for the 20-minute qualifying session, which will be followed by a 25-minute sprint race at 13:35. The pit stop race will take place at 17:15, which requires a mandatory pit stop take place between the 24th and 40th minutes of the race.
